Route 66

Like the old song suggests "take the highway that's best, get your kicks on Route 66". The compelling road has been well traveled and highly captivates roadtrippers all around the world! Is it because it goes through the heart of the nation? Or does it draw people in because it's so ingrained in time? Are the neon lights and rusty abandoned tractors the pull? What ever it is, it must be on the to-do list of every keen roadtripper.

Route 66, also known as the 'main street of America' stretches diagonally through the heart of USA from LA to Chicago. It was established in 1926 as one of the original US highways. It covers a total of 2,448 miles (3940km) and served as a major path for those migrating west. Business was good along the highway for communities because of the popularity of the route. Now days, businesses along the route stay alive due to their geographical placement and play up their connections to the historic route for the roadtrippers.

Route 66 takes you through a cross section of the States, from sundrenched LA, through the barren deserts and canyons and and into the streets and citylife of Chicago.

Join the nostalgia and yearn for the good old days on route 66 in an RV this summer. The journey could take you ten days, less than ten days or a month. However long you want to spend in each place is up to you!

The two lane (in most places) will be lined by hundred's of typical Diner's, dilapidated Gas stations, dero motels and many a tourist attraction. Perfect for a picture or two backed by a blue summer sky. Wind your way on the seemingly endless road passing through small roadside towns followed by another endless horizon. Sounds perfect for a roadtrip!

Your journey begins in LA. Pick up an RV and get on the road! From LA you'll travel interstate 7 times. California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri and Illinois!

California: Take a walk on Santa Monica Pier in LA and to start the journey off, check out the Barstow Route 66 Mother Road Museum.

Arizona: Possibly the most spectacular part of the trip, but we'll let you decide. The Grand Canyon National Park should be your destination. The Soaring canyon will leave you breathtaken. Enjoy some coffee, jewellery or Route 66 gifts at Historic Seligman Sundries in Seligman and Cool Springs Camp standing on the side of the road between Kingman and Oatman.

New Mexico: Alburquerque, Tinkertown and a plethora of museums , take your pick. Santa Rosa also is home to the geological phenomenon - the famous Blue Hole, an astonishingly clear water hole in the middle of the desert.

Texas: Amarillo will give you more museums, 6th street district and a route 66 themed rest area.

Oklahoma: The state with more attractions on Route 66 than any other. Stock up the RV with some Nut's from the nut house, stop in at Sandhill's curosity shop in Erick and Cherokee Trading post.

Kansas: Four Women on the route is an old Route 66 service station if you need to fill up.

Missouri: Has museums, gardens and a dreamy drive in movie theatre! And, as a bit of a gimmick, it also holds the world's largest rocking chair in Fanning.

Illinois: The destination state. Home to a corn maze ( in the fall) and many a museum and attraction.

The terrific freedom of an RV means you can stop wherever you want for a break or rest, pull up in any RV Park and spend the night or, travel for hours on end. You'll be glad of an RV when you're in the middle of barren land and need to use the bathroom, or feel like a cup of coffee...

Check out some RV parks on or near route 66. Don't risk turning up to a run down Motel, get yourself an RV for the journey at RV Rental Sale Finder.
